FACES OF THE MOUNTAIN
CAPTURING THE SPIRIT OF MT SHASTA THROUGH ART
I’m thrilled to introduce my latest painting series, “Faces of the Mountain”, a creative journey that draws upon my experiences of meditation, spirituality, and deep connection with the natural world. Inspired by the beauty and unique spiritual presence of Mt. Shasta in Northern California, this project aims to reveal the mountain’s essence through a series of 10-12 paintings. Each piece will embody a distinct state of consciousness I’ve experienced while immersed in the landscapes of this mighty volcano.
Capturing Essence, Not Just Landscape
Although I don’t typically focus on landscapes, my approach with “Faces of the Mountain” is to use elements like landforms, light, and color to express my internal experiences and perceptions on the mountain. Each painting will evoke a different mood or “face” of Mt. Shasta, akin to a portrait that goes beyond physical resemblance, capturing something deeper—the essence or spirit of the mountain in that moment.
My aim is to explore the mountain’s diverse landscapes across seasons, times of day, and atmospheric changes. The colors, forms, and play of light will serve as tools to convey my impressions of the mountain’s energy, inviting viewers to feel the qualities I experience.
Deepening My Connection Through Research and Exploration
Beyond my direct experiences, I’ll be researching the mountain’s geological history, Native American lore, and New Age spiritual perspectives. This knowledge will deepen my connection to the subject and enrich my creative interpretations. By delving into Mt. Shasta’s story, I hope to honor the mountain not only as an awe-inspiring natural wonder but also as a symbol of the spiritual encounters it offers.
Moments of Transformation
With climate shifts influencing everything from vegetation to water sources, Faces of the Mountain highlights the mountain’s unique, transforming character across time. By painting scenes that may look quite different in the future, this series becomes a chronicle of transformation—both external (in nature) and internal (in consciousness). This concept reflects an awareness that, like the mountain, our relationship to the natural world is constantly evolving, inspiring a mindful approach to conservation.
Inviting You to Join the Journey
As I create each painting, I’ll share updates in my monthly newsletter, telegram thread, and on my website, providing insights into the inspiration and process behind each piece. I invite you to join me on this artistic journey into the heart of Mt. Shasta, discovering together the mountain’s “faces” through a blend of light, color, and consciousness. “Faces of the Mountain” is more than a series of artworks; it’s a meditation on nature, spirit, and the landscapes within and around us.
Please enjoy the gallery below of photos I took on a two week camping trip in late September / early October as I was developing the concept for this project and gathering reference images for paintings.
